DR RANJIT RAO: MEDITATION & MARTINI

On Saturday, October 10 we will be hosting a Conversation With Dr Ranjit Rao to talk about his book Meditation & Martini.

Dr Rao came across meditation as a medical student and has included meditation, yoga, and fitness as part of his own routine over the last 20 years.  He completed a teacher training course but never had time to teach it because he was studying medicine.  Dr Rao has been a regular meditator, and that held him in good stead during university and training days, and now as a surgeon.

Dr Rao’s work as a surgeon gives him a unique perspective on matters pertaining to health and wellness and the choices we make towards a more vibrant more fulfilling life.  He is a keen promoter of this aspect of life and writes a daily blog.

The place for our conversation is the Community Health Centre, Station Road, next to the hospital, the event will start with afternoon tea at 2.30 and at 3.00 we will begin our conversation with Dr Rao.  Although the event is free we will need numbers for catering, you can book at Foster’s Little Bookshop, 4 Station Road, Foster, call 5682 2089 or send an email to flb@virtul.net.au.

PROM COAST SEACHANGE FESTIVAL - DOUBLE TAKE

We are very pleased to be taking part in the Seachange Festival window art Double Take and we will be collaborating with Kim McDonald for a stunning installation.  This is the story of our collaboration.

BOOKS AND ART
NATURAL FRIENDS

The message from our window installation is that art and books are natural companions, they both tell stories.

This art defines the space with a story that is based on memories of the past; the image will mean different things to each viewer as a reflection of their own experiences.  Those experiences will range from past to present and encompass old memories and new memories.

These books too tell a story; when you open a book you travel the path the author has chosen; the stories may link to memories for the reader, conjuring up experiences from the past.  The stories may also take the reader into places they have never been and so create memories from anothers experiences.

SISTERS IN CRIME EVENT APRIL 17

The Sisters in Crime’s next event of interest is Friday, April 17 title Undercover, Under Fire and Under-appreciated takes a look at the realities of modern policing in fact and fiction.

True crime author Liz Porter interrogates two former police criminal investigators about their different takes on their experiences – one through memoirs, the other through the novel.

Over her 18-year career in the NSW police force, Belinda Neil relished her roles as a homicide investigator and hostage negotiator, but the horrors she saw and the years of broken sleep led her to contemplate suicide by jumping off a cliff.  She wrote Under Siege instead.  Belinda shows us the remarkable job homicide investigators and hostage negotiators perform, and the resilience and courage they show in impossible
circumstances.

Pauline Toohey spent nearly 25 years as a member of Victoria Police, working mainly as a crime analyst in Melbourne’s West with stints at the Major Drug Investigation Department and Homicide. She took up writing as a distraction to help her through one of those many ‘curve balls’ that life throws – and hasn’t stopped.  First publishing Pull of the Yew Tree, a novel set in 15th-century Ireland, and My Rickety Metronome, her debut crime novel and first in a series, was released in January by UK publisher, Indigo Dreams Publishing.

The event is being held at The Rising Sun Hotel, cnr Raglan St & Eastern Rd, South Melbourne.  Free on-street parking after 6pm.

VALENTINE'S DAY: February 14, 2015 Window of Love

Some people celebrate Valentine's Day by giving flowers, chocolates, jewellery or other presents of all shapes and sizes to their loved ones or those they admire.  Local trader Deborah Harris from Main Street Revelations has offered customers a unique way to celebrate this day.  Customers are given the chance to write a dedication to love on a heart shaped paper and post them in the window of the store.  What a wonderful idea, well done Deborah.
