THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD BY STEPHANIE BISHOP

We have another great review from Helen Nkansah.

Have you ever wondered whether new surroundings can cause you to lose a sense of yourself?  And create a yearning that can turn one ‘Upside down, inside out.’?

Acclaimed Australian writer and poet, Stephanie Bishop, with strength and tenderness, investigates this notion by weaving together the lives of Charlotte and Henry who take journeys, in the 1960s, across both hemispheres of the world.  The story traces a complicated displacement of their hearts in a search for the meaning of home, what it means to depart from it, and whether it can be found again.  Through their eyes as lovers, parents, and professionals, we experience the rich tapestry of their feelings as they grapple with their surroundings and events.

I was deeply affected by Bishop’s writing.  I could visualise the climatic and living conditions which seemed to attach to the psyches of all Bishop’s characters, causing them this vacillation of emotions.  Skilfully, all of our senses are provoked - the chilling whistle and crunch of English winds and ice, the vivid blinding summer hues of Western Australia, the acrid fungal smells of emerald Indian dampness.  I am still thinking about it and them.

I highly recommend The Other Side of the World as a poignant, memorable fiction and possibly a reality?

JACK ANDRAKA: BREAKTHROUGH

Have you ever had a problem you would give everything to solve - a problem so difficult you would spend years searching for a solution?

When Jack Andraka was thirteen, he had a whole pile of problems like this. An outsider at school, he knew he didn't fit in - and a close family friend was dying of cancer. But instead of giving in to the bullying and the despair, he took another path. Using his passion for science, he decided to try to create a better method of cancer detection.

After conducting two years of research and asking hundreds of universities and companies for help, to no avail, Jack was finally able to secure the lab space necessary to test out his ingenious idea. In the end, he did it. Jack's early-detection test for pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancers has the potential to be more than four hundred times more effective than the medical standard - and it costs only three cents per use.

Jack was just fifteen at the time he came up with his solution. Jack Andraka's story is not just one of inspiring teenage success; it is a story of overcoming depression and homophobic bullying, and of finding the resilience to persevere.

CAROLYN LANDON

The author event with Carolyn Landon on July 18th is something we've been waiting for, it seems forever.  Carolyn has brought her biographical talent to capturing the life and times of our most beloved artist, Celia Rosser.

This is not a first for Carolyn, she has also recorded the lives of Daryl Tonkin in Jackson's Track: Memoir of a Dreamtime Place and the sequel Jackson's Track Revisited, Bet Boyanton in Cups with No Handles, and Eileen Harrison in Black Swan: A Koorie Woman's Life.  When you look at the amount of reference material and bibliography listed for each of these memoirs it gives you an understanding of the way Carolyn immerses herself in the background of the people whose portrait she creates. She has now added Banksia Lady: Celia Rosser, Botanical Artist to the list.

Carolyn came to Australia in 1968 as a traveller, hitchhiking by small aeroplane throughout the far north. She was a teacher in Australian state schools for almost thirty years, and withher husband, Larry Hills, she has written and published several musical plays.

CELIA ROSSER

We are looking forward to the launch of Celia's book on Sunday and hope to have some photos for this blog to share.  Arrangements to have an event with Celia in Foster are on the go and as soon as we have a date I'll shout it from the roof top.  No one needs to be concerned they won't hear about it.  Thank you to every one who has come in to ask if they will see Celia here soon...........yes!!!

Some of you have ordered copies of Celia's book and I've been assured by the publisher that they will arrive sometime towards the end of next week.  I think they've been surprised with the demand for her book.  We have two orders in with the publisher and have just found out it will be a couple of weeks before the second order arrives.  One way or the other we will get a copy of this book into every hand that wants one.

FOSTER'S LITTLE BOOKSHOP - THANK YOU

Thank you to those people who made a comment on the post with our news, or who sent an email.  We loved the comments.

ADULT COLOURING BOOKS - A TREND?

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about adult colouring books and since then we've had more queries about them.  Consequently I've spent some time looking for different versions and we look forward to there being more on the shelves soon.  There are some in our window right now.

The reason for this post is a comment made by a visitor to the area about her need for a small selection of colouring pencils she could put in her handbag............so another search turned up these little gems.  Small round boxes with a selection of little colouring pencils.  They will be on our shelves in a couple of weeks.  I'll let you know when they arrive.  Cute?

This is the general size and shape and there will a selection of colour and style.  If you think you'd like a set let me know and I'll put one away for you.

NEWS ABOUT FOSTER'S LITTLE BOOKSHOP

It occurred to me the other day that although we've had the bookshop on the market (to sell) since early this year, there are some who haven't yet caught up with that news.  So.......

Nine years ago this coming July we opened the doors at Number 4 Station Road and Foster's Little Bookshop was born.  Over the years we have built the business, becoming involved in the community and putting ourselves out there on radio and in print.  There were 'thin' years where we learned the value of good budgeting (thanks to Bob) and how important it is to 'know' what a customer will buy.  I think the greatest pleasure has been helping someone to choose a book (either for themselves of for someone else) and getting feedback later that 'it was a great success'.

We both believe this business has more years to be successful, it's just not where we want to be for the future.  I was asked the other day 'what will you do when you've sold the business' my answer was..........'if you have half an hour I'll tell you'.........there are so many things we'd both like to be involved with, particularly in this community, and we think now is the time to go.

So.......if you know someone who might be interested in entering the exciting publishing industry send them a link to this post.

MIND DOODLING

How many of you count things, not in an OCD (obsessive compulsive) way, just when sitting with the brain in neutral, find yourself counting things, like panes in a window, tiles on the floor, telephone poles, white posts along the road........I think you get the idea.

I've just found out this is called 'mind doodling' and there are many, many people who do it.  Most of us didn't know there were others caught up in this phenomena, what a relief.  Here's a link with a little more information, if you're interested.

E L JAMES AUTHOR OF FIFTY SHADES OF GREY

June 1, 2015 – London – On social media earlier today bestselling author E L James announced that she will shortly release a new version of her worldwide bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey -- this time written from Christian Grey's point of view. The new book, titled Grey, will be published on June 18th – a date that devotees may remember as Christian’s birthday.

Since the publication of Fifty Shades of Grey in 2011, thousands of readers have written to James requesting Christian's point of view. On the opening page of Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told By Christian, James writes, “This book is dedicated to those readers who asked…and asked… and asked… and asked for this." In the new work, she will offer her fans the opportunity to see the world of Fifty Shades anew through the eyes of its intriguing and enigmatic protagonist.

CELIA ROSSER

We have great news, finally the book we've been waiting for from Celia Rossa is due to be launched.  As soon as we have stock we'll send out an alert.

To be launched by The Hon Dr Kay Patterson on 21 June at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Cranbourne.

This is the story of Celia Rosser, internationally acclaimed Botanical Illustrator, who ultimately dedicated her life to painting the entire genus of Banksia, the only artist to have done such a thing. Her dedication to the task put her at the centre of the Monash Banksia Project underwritten by the University for twenty-five years and culminating in the production of an extraordinary three-volume florilegium that became one of the great books published in the twentieth century. In telling this story of Celia Rosser’s unparalleled talent and extraordinary achievement, this book explores the history of Botanical Illustration, Botany, academia, gardens and their herbarium and Australia’s place in changing the shape of the world.
